INTO THE SIVKA RIVER, 600 KM AWAY OF CHISINAU, WERE THROWN CALCIUM HYPOCHLORITE

An amount of 30 kg of calcium hypochlorite, were thrown into the Sivka river, tributary of Nistru (Dniester) river, on 15 December, as an accident occurred at a fertilizer producing factory JSC "Magniu", in Kalus, in the Ukrainian region of Ivano-Frankovsk. Calcium hypochlorite, a substance used for neutralization of chlorine, it is very poisonous and is fatally dangerous to the people. Moldovan Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Constantin Mihailescu today told journalists that the Ukrainian State Hydrometeorological Service, the Ukrainian Environment Protection Ministry and the State Agency for Ecology of the Ivano-Frankovsk region, have confirmed the accident, but specified that it is a local one, and has no negative impact on the Nistru river. Mihailescu said that 30 kg of calcium hypochlorite is a big quantity for Sivka, which has a length of 70 kilometres and is 2-3 kilometres broad. Laboratory results show that chlorine in the river's water has more than doubled, amounting to 700 milligrams per litre, while the maximal admissible norm is of 300 milligrams per litre. Referring to the quality of water in the Nistru river, Mihailescu said that all the samples taken in Moldova showed that chlorine's quantity varies from 28.4 to 35.5 milligrams per litre, while the highest norm is of 300 milligrams per litre....
